Sono-(soro)ridades Collective (2022-ongoing)

Feminist Sonographies of Situated Listening is an immersive radio installation that maps out the research connections between the multidisciplinary individual practices of the sono(soro)ridades collective. The project was led and realized by Amanda Gutiérrez as part of her PhD research. The Sono-(soro)ridades Collective is a collaboration with Amanda Gutiérrez, Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda, Laura Balboa, Victoria Polti, and Ana Alfonsina Mora. Sono-(soro)ridades is a term we have used to discuss decolonial sisterhood through sound.

Feminist Sonographies of Situated Listening includes a 54-minute soundtrack played through ten radios arranged on the floor in front of a concept map graphic. The soundtrack includes a narration of the individual voices in the collective describing our different approaches to research-creation that uses sound, along with reflections on our collaboration. The sound script was printed and bound as a booklet and was made available to viewers as part of the installation. It can be viewed here:

Additional aspects of our collaboration on the evolution and application of the term sono-(soro)ridades resulted in a panel at the Latin American Studies Association congress in 2023: The Right to Listen: Coloniality, Aural Regimes and Technopolitical Activisms, organized by Amanda Gutiérrez, chaired by Victoria Polti with Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda as discussant. During this panel, I presented an ethnographic research project that I undertook at the Rio Grande River: Grating Flesh, Radical Hate and the Rio Grande. Further iterations of the project include a forthcoming book chapter.
